Frequently Asked Questions - Deep Fried Kimchee - FAQ

Is DEEP FRIED KIMCHEE all about kimchee?
NO.  On DEEP FRIED KIMCHEE you'll find uniQue perspectives on all your favorite foods, reviews, recipes and more.   Although kimchee is one food that I love, it is one of many.  I chose DEEP FRIED KIMCHEE because it's a cool name and in some ways representative of my tastes.  I like spicy and I like foods from around the globe, but I also like it when Paula Deen adds an extra stick of butter to a dish, not 'cause the recipe called fer it, but just 'cause it was sittin' thur

Who the f is Richie?
I am the inventor of DEEP FRIED KIMCHEE, the dish, and the founder of DEEP FRIED KIMCHEE.com, the blog.

I'm confused, where are you from? New York , Las Vegas, Los Angeles?
I've been calling Las Vegas home since 2005. Prior to that, I lived in New York for 9 years, and I was born and raised in Los Angeles.  I still spend a lot of time in both New York and LA.

Are you a cook or something?
NO, I AM NOT A COOK. If you’ve seen my videos or read any of my discussions about cooking it should be quite obvious that I am definitely not a cook.  I guess you could call me more of a home cook, but even that’s a stretch.  I consider myself more of a “kitchen scientist” who doesn't have any kind of science background.

What is kimchee?
Kimchee is a fermented pickle commonly made with Napa cabbage and is a traditional Korean side dish served with almost every meal.  Click here for Wikipedia entry for 'kimchee'.

Kimchee's gross, why do you like it?
Kimchee has a recognizable, pungent odor that can sometimes repulse those not accustomed to it.  Many find the pungency part of the allure.  Kimchee is like a dill pickle on crack.  It's like the sprightly, red-headed, slightly less bad smelling granddaughter of Taiwanese stinky chou tofu Tangy, hot, spicy, goes great with rice...and a little stinky.

If you've never had kimchee before or if you've turned it down after getting a whiff, then you should definitely try DEEP FRIED KIMCHEE.  The breading and ranch dressing offset the intense flavor and offer a great opportunity to see what kimchee's all about.  (It's kind of like the eating equivalent of looking at the sun through one of those pin-hole boxes elementary school kids make to see an eclipse.)  Click here to learn how to make DEEP FRIED KIMCHEE at home.

Isn’t it spelled K-I-M-C-H-I?
"Kimchee" or "Kimchi" are both acceptable (or even "gimchi" according to Wikipedia). Personally, I’ve always spelled it Kimchi, but there are a lot of people out there who’ve never even heard of Kimchi.  So when some of the uninitiated try to sound out K-I-M-C-H-I they often end up pronouncing the CHI like ‘chive” without the V or like ‘kite” without the t (like Greek Chi).

Spell it K-I-M-C-H-E-E and you leave little doubt as to the pronunciation while simultaneously raising the global awareness of kimchee in general.  The latter not really being one of my goals, but I'm not shying away from it.  Also, if you forget which spelling to use, don't worry.  Either spelling redirects you to this site.  www.deepfriedkimCHI.com
